The Acronym Trap: What the AEO vs. GEO vs. AI SEO Debate Overlooks

This week, three visible advocates in the emerging LLM-optimization space—Graphite, AthenaHQ, and Surfer—each published their argument for naming the new discipline of optimizing for large language models. Graphite’s Ethan Smith promoted AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), AthenaHQ’s Alan Yao argued for GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), and Surfer’s Tomasz Niezgoda defended AI SEO. Even ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini were asked to weigh in as synthetic referees.
These firms shape the language of the debate, but the commercial center of gravity already sits elsewhere—with Profound, Evertune, and Scrunch, which operationalize LLM visibility tracking and reporting at scale. Which makes the current naming contest less about market leadership and more about conceptual framing.
Naming Is Not Governance
Each acronym describes a fragment of truth. AEO highlights precision, GEO broadens scope, and AI SEO leverages familiarity. Yet all three are linguistic constructs, not control systems.
